in Proc. of European Wireless ’99 and ITG Fachtagung Mobile Kommunikation, ITG Fachbericht 157, pp. 187-192, October 1999, München, Germany Abstra t | Reduction of energy consumption of mobile communication devices is a very important research and engineering field. Many research efforts are concentrated on design of low power IC design and streamlined energy-optimized communication protocols. In this paper we explore another direction, namely Protocol Harmonization. We show by example, that balancing operation of different communication protocol layers leads to an reduction of energy consumption. This is also known as vertical protocol optimization. We demonstrate this approach by means of IEEE 802.11 a wireless LAN standard. We show that there is a RF transmission power – MAC level retransmission trade-off, which effects energy consumption and therefore requires a harmonization between physical and MAC (Medium Access Control) layer. Our results indicate, that power control mechanisms should take into account the MAC protocol as an additional parameter.

Improving Bandwidth-power Efficiency of Homogeneous Wireless Networks Using On-meet Threshold Strategy (RESEARCH NOTE)
Over two decades, a problem of location dependent has been focused for improving the communication Bandwidth-Power Efficiency of homogeneous networks. The efficiencies of communication links are weakened by the Hidden Terminal Problem. Thus we propose a Fine – Tune Strategy for analyzing the On-Off communication region. We were observed that the proposed technique had been able to track and mo...

IEEE 802.16e is the latest broadband wireless access standard designed to support mobility. IEEE 802.16e (MAC + PHY) is an emerging standard for mobile wireless broadband access systems. In any mobile networks, power saving is one of the most important features for the extension of devices’ lifetime. To enhance the power efficiency of broadband wireless sensor networks based on battery power, p...
متن کاملLow Power and Low Latency MAC Protocol: Dynamic Control of Radio Duty Cycle
In low-power and lossy networks (LLNs), power-constrained devices consume most of power to communicate with their neighbors. To save power, traditional MAC protocols usually turn off RF transceivers while there is no radio communication. Since RF transceivers consume most of their energy in idle listening, turning RF transceivers off can save significant amount of energy. However, delay of pack...
متن کاملStochastic Congestion Alleviation with a Trade-off between Demand Response Resources and Load Shedding
Under the smart grid environments, Demand Response Resources (DRRs) as power system resources can effectively participate in and improve performance of electric systems. Congestion management is one of the technical challenges in which DRRs can play a significant role. Previously, congestion management is applied without considering the power system uncertainties. Therefore, a stochastic conges...

Traditional wireless sensor networks (WSNs) transmit the scalar data (e.g., temperature and irradiation) to the sink node. A new wireless visual sensor network (WVSN) that can transmit images data is a more promising solution than the WSN on sensing, detecting, and monitoring the environment to enhance awareness of the cyber, physical, and social contexts of our daily activities. However, the s...
